Celebrating our Planet

Encouraging a Sustainable #SymantecLife Around the World

Did you know that 72% of paper is consumed by 22% of the world’s population (the United States, Europe and Japan)?

or that 80,000 acres of forest disappear from the earth every day?

or that leaving a computer on overnight for a year creates enough carbon dioxide to fill a doubledecker bus?

…or that there are more microplastic particles in our oceans than there are stars in the Milky Way?

It is for these reasons and so many more that we are Going Green in 2018”, a yearlong campaign of eco-friendly awareness, challenges, and initiatives, designed to encourage Symantec employees to take action, and help protect our world.

However, reversing these trends relies on us as individuals making changes—and encouraging others do the same. As we celebrate World Environment Day—the “people’s day” to do “something” to take care of the Earth—we highlight the ways Symantec employees are taking action to help protect our planet, giving back to their communities, incorporating environmental sustainability into their day-to-day lives and helping to create a more secure and sustainable future.

#SymantecLife celebrates Earth Day across Symantec

As World Environment Day states “something” can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be a solo action or involve a crowd. Across the world, Symantec employees did just this—making a difference individually, joining together locally and together making a global impact.

  • At our headquarters in Mountain View we held our annual Earth Day Fair with nearly 300 employees in attendance and featuring more than 20 booths educating employees on how to build a more sustainable lifestyle. From Pacific Gas & Electric discussing electric vehicle options to SunWork showcasing the benefit of solar energy, the booths covered topics including energy efficiency, commute alternatives, water conservation, organic and healthy foods, recycling, and locally-sourced produce.
  • Our Tempe, Arizona office took part in a park clean up and the Dublin Green Team held Earth Day events including a lunch and learn, partnership with the founder of OWLS to make bird houses, and a volunteer event with An Taisce where participants spent the day on one of the UNESCO World Biosphere ReservesBull Island.
  • In Singapore, the team conducted an exciting initiative with Nan Hua Primary School, in partnership with SolarBuddy, an Australian nonprofit teaching primary students about the pressing ecological and social problems surrounding energy poverty. The team assembled 90 SolarBuddy lights with 45 students. Through the activity the students learned about who would receive the lights and why these communities are facing energy challenges. They also wrote letters to the children who will be receiving them.

Additionally, a cyber wellness workshop was held for the students at the school. The session covered key online safety lessons such as the perils of unsecured wi-fi networks as well as a demo of a phishing email.

  • And our Pune office held an afternoon full of activities engaging employees on environmental topics including presentations, a movie and eco-friendly gifts for participants.

Going Green is going strong in 2018

We believe that Earth Day and World Environment Day are important points in time each year, however, it is crucial we carry this momentum into our everyday lives. As part of our “Going Green in 2018”, campaign we are asking all employees to make small changes in their everyday life to help our planet (at least one per month) through the It’s the Little Things challenge. To date we have received 1,350 employee commitments!

In honor of World Environment Day, here are a few suggestions:

  • Saving paper is a simple way to make an impact. Think twice before sending something to the printer and set your printer to print on both sides of the paper.
  • Planting a tree is a simple way to make an impact. You can plant a tree with just one dollar through nonprofit One Tree Planted. In fact, Symantec and its employees have already contributed to planting more than 700 trees!
  • Turning your computer off at night is a simple way to make an impact. In addition to conserving energy, turning off your computer can reduce energy costs.
  • Using reusable bottles is a simple way to make an impact, and if you’re going to buy a drink, why don’t you choose something in a glass or aluminum container?

Another component of the “Going Green in 2018” campaign is the Reducing Plastics initiative, launched in Dublin in March, focused on reducing the majority of single-use plastic bottles from our offices worldwide, where possible, over the next several years. We are encouraging employees to reduce their use of plastic bottles by educating them on the impacts of plastics, providing alternatives, along with Symantec reusable bottles. The Dublin initiative has reduced the use of single-use plastic bottles in this office by 93 percent!

Additionally, after a successful launch in Dublin, in May, Culver City was the first site in the Americas to participate this initiative. The office will help reduce our environmental footprint and minimize environmental pollution by removing single-use plastic beverage bottles and single-use plastic coffee pods and coffee makers. Each employee at the site has also received a new Symantec reusable water bottle.

Making every day Earth Day and World Environment Day

The next phase of the Going Green campaign—Our Decisions Matter—will be launching in July. During this time we’ll be building awareness around sustainable lifestyle choices such as commuting (walking, biking, carpooling), how to make sustainable food choices, and much more.

We look forward to bringing you more updates on how our teams are Going Green in 2018!
